Yale MacGillivray
An experimental and creative approach characterises Yale’s filmmaking. Formally trained in time-based art and experimental film, Yale is driven by a passion for storytelling that challenges, dissects, and observes the human experience through documentary and scripted narrative content.
Drawing inspiration from French filmmaking, including impressionism, surrealism, and poetic realism, her work explores the tension between the individual and the collective societal experience. A deeper, almost intangible understanding of the human experience subtly influences her creative process, guiding her to connect more profoundly with the stories she tells and the voices she amplifies.
With over eight years of experience at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Yale's career spans digital, social, and television platforms. She honed her craft in the ABC Regional and ABC Indigenous teams before taking on the role of Executive Producer in the Entertainment team, overseeing flagship shows and live events such as The Weekly, Mardi Gras, and First & Forever. Yale’s passion for storytelling reached new heights when she co-directed Changing Tides, a documentary following surfer and artist Billy Bain on a road trip along the NSW coastline, examining Australia’s colonial past and frontier injustices.
Now based in Rockhampton, Darumbal Country, Yale continues her work as a Documentary Producer with No Coincidence Media, where she is dedicated to unearthing untold stories and perspectives. Her meticulous attention to detail and innovative filmmaking methods ensure that each project is infused with creativity, authenticity, and a deep connection to the cultures, histories and experiences that shape the stories being told.
* Yale is a descendant of the Kalkatungu Warriors of the far eastern Australian Dessert and the Gaelic Warriors of the Western Isles of the Scottish Highlands.
